details
The Foundation’s work is rooted in Djimon Hounsou’s personal journey - from his childhood in Cotonou, Benin, to homelessness in France, to international success in Hollywood. His breakout role in Spielberg’s Amistad gave him a direct window into the historical trauma of slavery and inspired his mission to reconcile the past with a better future.
Today, DHF serves as a cultural movement and call to action, inviting people across the globe to become “Voices for Africa” and shape a brighter, more connected future.
Unik Ernest serves on the Advisory Board of the Djimon Hounsou Foundation. Drawing on his decades of experience as a global connector and hospitality entrepreneur, Unik advises on strategic partnerships, cultural programming, and high impact events that raise awareness and resources for the Foundation’s initiatives. His network across entertainment, business, and philanthropy helps DHF reach new audiences and build meaningful alliances to advance its mission.
Info
Founded on December 2, 2019 - symbolically the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, the Djimon Hounsou Foundation (DHF) was launched at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of the transatlantic slave trade. Actor and humanitarian Djimon Hounsou created the Foundation to strengthen Africa’s intergenerational identity, reconnect the peoples of the African diaspora with their ancestral roots, and combat modern day slavery and human trafficking.
